What's your role at Wickes?I am an Operations Procurement Manager. I sit within the Store Operations Department under the Cost Control team. Tell us a little bit about your background. How did you end up working at Wickes?I initially started with Wickes as a part-time colleague in stores whilst I was at University but it soon became clear to me that I wanted to stay on and build my career in Wickes. After earning my degree, I started taking on more roles in-store and became full time. I was exploring my options both in-store and out of stores as I found out that there was a wide variety of roles available within Wickes and that’s how I made my way to the Support Centre. I have now had three different roles within the Support Centre (working my way up within Store Operations) and I’m loving my time with Wickes even more. What makes a typical day at Wickes for you?I’m involved (to varying degrees) in all new stores, refits and all the ranges reviews that take place in stores so you’ll probably find me in a meeting! Joking aside, there is a lot of interacting with our suppliers (building relationships and keeping on top of all the projects going on) and with lots of different teams in the Support Centre. All the while, I have to make sure we’re getting the best work for the best price. It’s such a varied role and you get to talk to and work with so many people. What do you love about your job? It’s got to be the fact I get to interact and work with so many different people. It’s great to be able to meet so many people from teams across the Support Centre. What makes Wickes a great place to work? What advice would you give someone who wants to work at Wickes?I really enjoy the flexibility and the culture Wickes offers. Both in-store and in the Support Centre there is so much opportunity to learn and grow as well as having a life outside of work. Everyone is so supportive and lovely, it’s amazing what you can achieve with the right culture! My advice to someone who wants to work at Wickes is: do it! Jump in with both feet and don’t be afraid to say yes to any and all opportunities that come your way.

I started off in fashion buying (I have a fashion degree) and slowly I started to look at interiors (I worked in the home furnishings department at Laura Ashley) which lead me to my role at Wickes in Commercial. I then moved into Marketing.A typical day for me is approving, writing and reading briefs within the Studio.  Managing timelines for print across all customers comms including publications. Ordering paper/booking in printers. I love how every day is different. Wickes is a fast pace business and with my role you need to be reactive to change and therefore each day brings variety and challenges. I like a challenge! It's a great place to work where you can share and explore new ideas every day and the business will support you

I am part of the Wickes Commercial Team: I’m the Category Assistant on Showroom Kitchens.I studied International Business and Languages at Stenden University in the Netherlands, while also having done a couple of internships in Germany.  When I saw the job advert for a Category Assistant at Wickes, I felt like it was something for me as a commercial role within a fast paced retail environment has always appealed to me. The process was quick and all the staff members in the recruitment journey were supportive and friendly. There is no real typical day at Wickes.  Generally, my day involves dealing with suppliers, setting up promotions and prices, working on our brochure, setting up our products online, making sure product data is accurate, competitor analysis and assisting our store members with their queries.I love that I get given a lot of responsibility and autonomy to make decisions. This helps me develop my commercial skills while also having the support of my manager. The varied day to day tasks ensure that my job is always interesting and keeps me motivated to do the best I can. Furthermore, I deal with a range of people on a daily basis both internal and external. The company culture is amazing and the people make Wickes a great place to work. Since I started the role, everyone has been friendly and supportive while pushing me to do my best. The work life balance is great and the company’s attitude towards flexible working is refreshing to see.The company also offers great training programs where skills can be obtained to aid development and progress within the company, enabling a steep learning curve.

I work within Commercial Finance at Wickes, providing business partner support to the Kitchen, Bathroom and Decorative teams. My role involves helping with budgeting and reforecasting, providing analysis on sales and margin performance, and providing support on building business cases. The role is very varied as I support our Showroom Kitchen and Bathroom business, which covers a fairly extensive end to end process. There’s never a dull moment! I’ve been working at Wickes for almost a year, but I started work at Deloitte, after graduating, where I worked for 5 years, which is where I gained my ACA qualification. Most of my time there was within Audit but I did have a year in Corporate Tax, providing advice and compliance services to Financial Services clients. I then moved to Barclays, where I had various business partner roles within the Retail Bank. I left there in May 2016 as I was looking for a new role that would develop and challenge me whilst being closer to home. Wickes ticked all those boxes!  Every day starts with me reviewing the previous days sales and margin performance. After that, (although a cliché) I can honestly say that every day is different. My role is very varied; I could be working on business cases, analysing promotions, working on month-end or forecasts: the list goes on! What I love about my job is the people and the diverse nature of my role. People here are really friendly, it’s great to be somewhere that you can work hard and be challenged whilst being around fun and engaging people. The working environment at Wickes is also great. Everyone is welcoming and supportive; people are more than willing to take time out to explain things and answer questions. I would say that the culture is what makes it a great place to work; there is a very engaged workforce, people work collaboratively and in the best interests of the business. If you’re thinking about joining Wickes, my advice would be to be prepared to push yourself and not be afraid to ask questions. Have the mindset of getting stuck in and getting 100% involved.

I started working at Wickes NCSC as a Service Delivery Team Leader straight out of University and had just finished travelling .I moved in to Central Operations to gain an understanding of how our store operation works. Following this , I sought to gain commercial experience so I chose Supply Chain. As an analyst I learned the technical aspects of our supply function, working closely with our commercial category managers, operations team and suppliers to deliver great customer facing availability in store. Following this I was promoted to Assistant Category Manager for the Specialist Business Unit. I now the manage supply chain for Plumbing & Heating, Roofing , Insulation and Cleaning as a Category Supply Manager. In between I've also had the opportunity to work on some interesting projects. A typical day involves reviewing the availability of the products I look after in store as well as the sales performance with my Category counterparts. I also review any current promotions and in store activity relevant to my categories which inform the decisions on volume of stock that we buy and put into our stores and through our delivery network. I try to ensure this has little negative impact on our operations as too little or too much stock creates challenges for our store teams and distribution network which ultimately impacts our customer's experience. I then start planning for any future activity , informing suppliers where necessary through forecasting and regular calls and contact . With seasonal products such as mine, when in peak , the days are quickly filled with analysing performance of key lines , responding to requests and queries from our store colleagues and speaking to suppliers constantly to ensure stock is delivered into our network in full and on time. The rest of my time is spent taking care of the technical aspects of how the above is executed. I enjoy working at pace and the environment is always changing in response to what is happening within the market. I like to switch it up every so often and have found colleagues and leaders who have supported me in my desire to get experience within different parts of the business. Working with a strong team and the people. You will always find a colleague willing to help you , I have had a the benefit of working in supportive teams for the duration of my time here, I've made lasting friendships and have met some real characters! Wickes' commitment to support communities and Charity through our Charity Partnerships is important to me, there is a strong sense of the desire to help and that is evident in the creative ways our colleagues find to raise money for important causes. Consider our Winning Behaviours. If you work well with others you will find a home here with the right attitude and desire to do well.

I’m an HR Assistant now, but before joining Wickes I worked for Matalan Retail for 16 years as an Admin and Operations Manager. In July 2016, I decided it was time for a career change. Whilst taking a break from working, the opportunity to work for Wickes as a temp came up, and in May 2017, I joined the HR Team as HR Assistant. I have to say it is one of the best choices I have ever made. A typical day for me at Wickes can vary day on day, depending upon what I am involved in doing with the HR team. I also look after the logistical side of the New DC Induction Training Programme for all New DC’s that join Wickes. I love the interaction that I have with colleagues and suppliers, which is a key part of my role, and the best part of my job is definitely the flexibility and opportunities that I have had since joining the business. Wickes is a great company to work for and if you’re thinking about applying, it’s definitely worth considering.

I am Operations Manager at the Wickes store in Watford, Hertfordshire I have always enjoyed working in retail and four years ago I found myself between jobs, so I applied for and accepted a cashier position at Wickes in Uxbridge. I found I loved the company, products, culture and customers and quickly decided I wanted to stay and build my career here. There is no such thing as a typical day for me Depending on which shift I am working each day, I could be opening the store, getting the tills out and ensuring the store is safe and ready to do business. I could then spend the day supervising the shop floor, dealing with customer enquiries, driving a forklift, making sure the store is trading legally, doing key control audits, challenging gaps and standards in the store, warehouse and yard. Another day I could be running the kitchen and bathroom showroom, line managing the Design Consultants to maximise sales from their appointments, keeping the forecast tracker updated before doing the nightly checks and locking up the store for the evening. I love everything, but in particular the sense of challenge and excitement from a situation which puts me outside of my comfort zone, such as a visit from directors, or having to respond to an incident requiring First Aid. I also get a particular sense of satisfaction when I finish work, and I have led my team to ensure the store is looking brilliant - full shelves, correctly labelled and all promo and POS material correctly implemented in full. Make your mark, don't be tempted to blend in, don't be afraid to work hard and seize every opportunity you're offered. Examine your performance throughout the day and ask yourself - "Have I made a difference?", "Did that customer get everything they need to complete their project?", "Would I be happy for my mum to receive service like that?", "Do my team see me as a role model and an inspirational leader?"

I started my eCommerce Merchandising career in fashion, previously working for F&F (Tesco) and New Look. I joined Wickes in September 2017 entering an exciting DIY industry which I found an interest in after buying and renovating a house. Everyday is different with new daily challenges to overcome which makes the role exciting. Ecommerce is a very fast-paced environment and you always have to be one step ahead. I love the ability to transform data into context by reviewing sales and customer shopping behaviour online to implement changes to the website. The market is ever evolving which forms an exciting part of my role to review market trends and keep up with the way customers change their online shopping behaviour. Wickes is a great place to work due to its family values. Everyone at Wickes is really friendly and supportive from the first day I started. Flexible working hours are another great benefit which enables me to improve my work/life balance. Do not hesitate to join and become part of an amazing team at Wickes!
