Marked annually on the 8th March, International Women's Day (IWD) celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity and raising awareness about women's equality. As part of our Balance for Better (BfB) workstream, we passionately believe that a balanced organisation is a great support for colleagues, it’s felt by our customers and will further enhance our brand and performance. So this year we’re inviting all colleagues from around the business to take part in our International Women’s Day celebration.Take a listen below to find out what our BfB committee members had to say about why they are passionate about BfB and why they are celebrating IWD:

What's your role at Wickes?I am an Operations Procurement Manager. I sit within the Store Operations Department under the Cost Control team. Tell us a little bit about your background. How did you end up working at Wickes?I initially started with Wickes as a part-time colleague in stores whilst I was at University but it soon became clear to me that I wanted to stay on and build my career in Wickes. After earning my degree, I started taking on more roles in-store and became full time. I was exploring my options both in-store and out of stores as I found out that there was a wide variety of roles available within Wickes and that’s how I made my way to the Support Centre. I have now had three different roles within the Support Centre (working my way up within Store Operations) and I’m loving my time with Wickes even more. What makes a typical day at Wickes for you?I’m involved (to varying degrees) in all new stores, refits and all the ranges reviews that take place in stores so you’ll probably find me in a meeting! Joking aside, there is a lot of interacting with our suppliers (building relationships and keeping on top of all the projects going on) and with lots of different teams in the Support Centre. All the while, I have to make sure we’re getting the best work for the best price. It’s such a varied role and you get to talk to and work with so many people. What do you love about your job? It’s got to be the fact I get to interact and work with so many different people. It’s great to be able to meet so many people from teams across the Support Centre. What makes Wickes a great place to work? What advice would you give someone who wants to work at Wickes?I really enjoy the flexibility and the culture Wickes offers. Both in-store and in the Support Centre there is so much opportunity to learn and grow as well as having a life outside of work. Everyone is so supportive and lovely, it’s amazing what you can achieve with the right culture! My advice to someone who wants to work at Wickes is: do it! Jump in with both feet and don’t be afraid to say yes to any and all opportunities that come your way.

I started off in fashion buying (I have a fashion degree) and slowly I started to look at interiors (I worked in the home furnishings department at Laura Ashley) which lead me to my role at Wickes in Commercial. I then moved into Marketing.A typical day for me is approving, writing and reading briefs within the Studio.  Managing timelines for print across all customers comms including publications. Ordering paper/booking in printers. I love how every day is different. Wickes is a fast pace business and with my role you need to be reactive to change and therefore each day brings variety and challenges. I like a challenge! It's a great place to work where you can share and explore new ideas every day and the business will support you

I am part of the Wickes Commercial Team: I’m the Category Assistant on Showroom Kitchens.I studied International Business and Languages at Stenden University in the Netherlands, while also having done a couple of internships in Germany.  When I saw the job advert for a Category Assistant at Wickes, I felt like it was something for me as a commercial role within a fast paced retail environment has always appealed to me. The process was quick and all the staff members in the recruitment journey were supportive and friendly. There is no real typical day at Wickes.  Generally, my day involves dealing with suppliers, setting up promotions and prices, working on our brochure, setting up our products online, making sure product data is accurate, competitor analysis and assisting our store members with their queries.I love that I get given a lot of responsibility and autonomy to make decisions. This helps me develop my commercial skills while also having the support of my manager. The varied day to day tasks ensure that my job is always interesting and keeps me motivated to do the best I can. Furthermore, I deal with a range of people on a daily basis both internal and external. The company culture is amazing and the people make Wickes a great place to work. Since I started the role, everyone has been friendly and supportive while pushing me to do my best. The work life balance is great and the company’s attitude towards flexible working is refreshing to see.The company also offers great training programs where skills can be obtained to aid development and progress within the company, enabling a steep learning curve.

There are many things that I love about working at Wickes. I love the culture. I love the camaraderie that is formed with colleagues. My manager trusts me to produce high quality work and results, and I work hard to maintain that level of trust, which keeps me engaged and happy, but at the same time, I love that my job enables me to love and enjoy my other passions in life.I believe what makes Wickes a great place to work is the fact that everyone shares the same vision and comes together to achieve a common goal being continue growing success at Wickes. The work environment reminds me of a close-knit family. Working at Wickes you will learn various skills and gain many valuable experiences, within a working environment where everyone is friendly, professional and always willing to help.

I work within Commercial Finance at Wickes, providing business partner support to the Kitchen, Bathroom and Decorative teams. My role involves helping with budgeting and reforecasting, providing analysis on sales and margin performance, and providing support on building business cases. The role is very varied as I support our Showroom Kitchen and Bathroom business, which covers a fairly extensive end to end process. There’s never a dull moment! I’ve been working at Wickes for almost a year, but I started work at Deloitte, after graduating, where I worked for 5 years, which is where I gained my ACA qualification. Most of my time there was within Audit but I did have a year in Corporate Tax, providing advice and compliance services to Financial Services clients. I then moved to Barclays, where I had various business partner roles within the Retail Bank. I left there in May 2016 as I was looking for a new role that would develop and challenge me whilst being closer to home. Wickes ticked all those boxes!  Every day starts with me reviewing the previous days sales and margin performance. After that, (although a cliché) I can honestly say that every day is different. My role is very varied; I could be working on business cases, analysing promotions, working on month-end or forecasts: the list goes on! What I love about my job is the people and the diverse nature of my role. People here are really friendly, it’s great to be somewhere that you can work hard and be challenged whilst being around fun and engaging people. The working environment at Wickes is also great. Everyone is welcoming and supportive; people are more than willing to take time out to explain things and answer questions. I would say that the culture is what makes it a great place to work; there is a very engaged workforce, people work collaboratively and in the best interests of the business. If you’re thinking about joining Wickes, my advice would be to be prepared to push yourself and not be afraid to ask questions. Have the mindset of getting stuck in and getting 100% involved.
